Bio/Research

Kim Gilbride is a molecular microbiologist who has been characterizing the microbial community of wastewater treatment systems for the last 20 years. Currently, her lab has two main research programmes; one looks at the distribution and activity of ammonia-oxidizers throughout the biological treatment process in order to understand how to reduce ammonia in final effluent, and the second uses the secondary treatment system as a model system for understanding the transfer mechanisms that underlie the dissemination of antibiotic resistances genes among mixed bacterial communities.
