Hasko von Kriegstein is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Law & Business in the Ted Rogers School of Management.
Dr. von Kriegstein's main research interests lie in business ethics and normative ethical theory. He thinks that the most promising way of defending capitalist institutions lies in showing that they are conducive to public welfare, and his research in business ethics rests on the assumption that business ethics is not mere moral casuistry in the sense of applying the principles of everyday morality to situations one may encounter in business. Rather, an ethics appropriate for business has to take seriously the institutional settings of the market and the various forms of organizations within it (including, prominently, the modern business corporation).
Dr. von Kriegstein holds a BA in Philosophy and Economics from University Bayreuth in his native Germany (2008), and he received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Toronto for a thesis on the nature and value of achievements (2014). Prior to joining Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson), he spent a year as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Moral and Political Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His work is interdisciplinary, and draws upon distinct areas such as philosophy, economic theory, and corporate law. His work has been published in in peer reviewed journals such as Business Ethics Quarterly, Utilitas, and Business and Society Review.
