Bio/Research

Dr. Bala Venkatesh is both founding Academic Director and head for the Centre for Urban Energy (CUE) at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson). He is currently the lead researcher of the NSERC Energy Storage Technology (NEST) Network, a multimillion dollar initiative to bring together leading academic, industry, utility, and government stakeholders to develop and commercialize innovative energy storage technologies. This collaboration will significantly increase the market penetration of Canadian-made electric storage technologies worldwide.

Dr. Venkatesh has extensive journal publications to his credit and has supervised about 40 MASc and PhD theses. Dr. Venkatesh's CUE endeavours build on previous research in the energy field including those on Reactive Power Market (funded by NSERC ), Wind Energy Economics (funded by NSERC), Distribution Systems Analysis (funded by the New Brunswick Innovation Fund), etc. In total, his extramural funding is in several million dollars. In the last two decades, he has worked on over 10 consulting projects in India and Canada.
